Received the New York 1900 book in the mail today - I love getting mail, don't you? Especially when it's a book. I've only found one photograph so far of my favorite house (middle pic) but it is a view I haven't seen before.
Hi, did you know the house to the right, is not part of the Vanderbilt mansion, even though it looks like the same style. originally when C. Vanderbilt built his house, it was on 57th & Fifth Avenue. this house on the right was built about the same time, but there were brownstones separating the two. When C. Vanderbilt bought the corner houses and had his enlarged, it looked like the other house was part of his. The other house was built for Charles Hutchinson, by George Post. the same architect as the Vanderbilt house. The C. Vanderbilt house is one of my favorites too. Wish i could find out more about the Hutchinson house, which is now the site of the Paris theater.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the info! I'll see what I can find about the Hutchinson house - I have access to an academic library where I work in higher education.
